    WINTER SKIN Keeping the skin healthy in winter is a skill which everybody would love to learn. Skin is the largest organ and its care is not just from outside but more from inside out. The skin becomes dry due to external causes but it is also being affected due to the internal environment. An individual must improve his immunity to decrease body's sensitivity to cold. Among the internal organs which can look after the skin specifically are the lungs and the large intestine. Hence exercise during the winter months is very important. Breathing exercise, playing in the sun if possible, jogging, running and physical exercise would move the Qi or Chi or Energy of the lungs. Blood stagnation will also clear and along with the Qi blood flow will improve and make the skin shiny and clear. Large intestine is another organ which has a see-saw balance between the lungs. Hence in cold attacks the constipation is inevitable. This has to be tackled by Sujok Acupuncture, seed or magnets or colour therapy. Drinking enough water consciously is very important as thirst condition is not there in winter months. **Oil could be added to bath water and applied to skin directly.**The toxins are removed from the skin by keeping our lungs and large intestine in good condition which relieves us of itchy and red skin. Cleaning skin with mild soap is very important two to three times a day including before sleeping. Clearing skin, scrubbing with mild scrubbing agents is important to remove dead skin and opening pores. This also improves the circulation of blood and Qi to that area, the meridian in that area gets activated and body is sparkling and shiny. Olive oil, coconut oil, mustard oil etc massage also improves the blood flow. As an acupuncturist we can help you and identify the areas to be massaged for the particular skin issue. Herbs and Foods for the Skin Chandan or haldi mixed with lemon can be applied for itchy skin for about 20 minutes. Application of aloe vera pulp is good for the skin. Eating aloe vera improves the health of the large intestine. Drinking tulsi or basil tea is therapeutic in winter months. Equal quantities of glycerin, rose water, and lemon juice can be applied for about 20 minutes. Kesar mixed with olive oil or almond oil can be put on the skin, also kesar mixed with food preparation will help in clearing blemishes of the skin. Carrot juice can be directly apply to the skin. Intake of carrot every day which is readily available is great practice in winter. Fish, avocados, walnuts, sweet potatoes, red and yellow bell peppers, sunflower seeds, broccoli, tomatoes are some of the skin friendly foods to survive the winter months.     CHEWING WELL FOR IMPROVING METABOLISM Until the food is chewed into the finest paste do not gulp it down your throat. Chewing food in your mouth helps to break down big morsels into digestible paste. The sense of taste is only on the tongue, so as much as we can retain it in the mouth we must enjoy the taste of food. Beyond that it is only work for the digestive system. It is not necessary to take a second helping of your favorite cake, enjoy it by chewing it properly, keeping it in the mouth till you can make the cake into a paste. Let your sense of taste enjoy the sweetness of sugar, let the sense of smell pick up the aroma of your chocolate cake. The twenty minutes that you will sit with a small cup cake on the table, let the sense of sight enjoy the soft velvety cake which you will consume in smallest bites. It’s a very good idea to take a small spoon for your food, if we eat a big morsel half the food just slips down the throat without being chewed, isn’t it a good custom that Chinese eat each grain of food with chop sticks. A lot of digestive enzymes are released in the saliva which help in better metabolism. When the food is exposed to the saliva by being in the mouth for longer duration it breaks down the fats, carbohydrates, proteins etc saliva also lubricates the food so easier on the esophagus . Eating fast is a habit, difficult to change but not impossible. Parents have to check right from childhood, the quantity of food they give to their child, is he chewing properly or not, and the size of his morsel. Hence a very conscious effort will have to be made by them and also teach them to eat in peace and not during any emotional upheaval. Don’t let your mind out of your mouth! Enjoy that morsel of your favorite food. Distracting items like watching television or reading or even too much conversation on the dining table is also not advisable. Chewing well thus helps us in losing weight and having less digestive problems like gas and bloating. The metabolic rate increases with this habit. Chewing slowly also makes you eat less, take at least double the time to eat your food than normal. It takes some time about 20 minutes for the brain to get the signal that the stomach is full.     REVERSAL OF DIABETES Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder, in which the patient has high glucose levels in the blood. The insulin production by the pancreas is either deficient or the body cells are resistant to insulin. There are two ways of looking after your diabetes. Firstly by exercise and then by correct diet. Both are equally important. EXERCISE Firstly activating the beta cells of the endocrine pancreas by walking, running, yoga, smile tai-chi, sam won dong, sam won gong. Stress or any unfortunate incidents are not good for Diabetes. It is difficult when children are found to be type 1 diabetic, it is a very big challenge to keep them away from harmful food items. Very tactfully and lovingly they should be looked after. Since diabetes is considered to be genetic it would be a healthy way of living if children of diabetic parents are also restricted a little and refrain themselves from eating too much foods with high glycemic index. Alcohol is high in carbs hence it should be consumed with restraint. DIET The other way to control diabetes is by eating a balanced diet which is more plant based. Food should be eaten at fixed times every day so that we do not confuse the body clock. The practice of having dessert after a meal is a definite no . The next item after meal should be consumed only after 2-3 hrs. An average working male adult should not consume more than 2500 calories. Female it is 2000 calories and children in age group of 5 to 10 yrs should not be given more than 1800 calories, spread over 6 to 7 meals. DIABETIC SMILE DIET 1st . MEAL (pre- breakfast) Fruit is good to start the day with. 2nd. MEAL (breakfast) could be different sprouts every day, various sprouts can be mixed for variety. Whole grains are full of anti oxidants with soluble and insoluble fiber. The fiber is like a broom which sweeps away even the fat and other debris. Sprouts can be commonly made from: Chickpea (black, white, green) mung beans, alfa alfa, wheat, barley, oats, quinoa, sesame, peas of all colors, fenugreek seeds, methi, dill, garlic, peanuts, rajma, beans of all hues and sizes, sunflower seeds, buckwheat mustard seeds, wheat grass, along with ginger, coriander, lemon and little salt if required. Sprouts should be slightly cooked specially in winters. 3rd .MEAL (before lunch) Orange, lemon juice, warm herbal tea without milk, coconut water, vegetable juice are few options for a drink. KAHWA TEA 1, One teaspoon Kashmiri green tea 2, Few Saffron( kesar) strands 3, Small piece cinnamon (dalcheeni) 4, Green cardamoms (elaichi) 5, Cloves (laung) 6, Few chopped almonds 7, Topped with rose petals HUNZA TEA (boil these ingredients for 5 minutes), 1, 4 cups water 2, 12 mint leaves 3, 8 tulsi leaves 4, 4 elaichi 5, 2 inch cinnamon stick 6, 20 gm ginger 7, Fresh squeeze of lemon 4th MEAL (lunch) Any dal or mung dal can be mixed with little rice or broken wheat made into a khichidi. When cooked add a lot of greens of your choice . greens are packed with tons of nutrition. 5 th MEAL (evening) Ragi java, herbal tea or lemon juice. Almonds, walnuts, pistachio, fox nuts (makhana), pea nuts, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, flax seeds can be eaten. 6 th MEAL (dinner) Warm soup is a great appetizer after which a big bowl of multi colored vegetables can be eaten in any recipe. Tomatoes having lycopene are good for diabetics, beans are nature’s most nutritious foods, vegetables could be having as many as the seven vegetables in one recipe, like colors of the rainbow. A small chapatti, or a small cup of quinoa millet, or chapatti made from ragi, jawar, bajra etc could be eaten. Bitter foods like bitter gourd, methi, neem, Indian blackberry (jamun), Indian goose berry (amla) show great medicinal affect on diabetes. Root and starchy vegetables should be avoided. Non vegetarian food is not advisable for diabetics. Keep fruits and vegetables handy all the time in the fridge so that when you are hungry you don’t rush to sweets or fried snacks. Friends and family should be informed so that they do not force wrong eating. Refined oils are not good for diabetic health, cold pressed oils can be substituted. Canola, olive, rice bran, flax seed, coconut, sesame, mustard oil, etc can be used. It is a good way to use two three oils for different preparations.
